About us

Skriðuklaustur is the former home of the famous author Gunnar Gunnarsson (1889-1975). Since 2000 it has been open as a centre of culture & history with various activities and exhibitions. It houses a museum about the author with personal guidance about his life and career as well as the adventure of building a mansion in Fljotsdalur valley in 1939. The house itself is one of Iceland's most treasured buildings, donated to the Icelandic nation by the author in 1948. It was designed by the German architect Fritz Höger.

Admission 1.100 kr. Ages 16 or less free. Klausturkaffi restaurant is located in the mansion house.

Medieval monastery

At Skriðuklaustur you can visit a monastic site and walk around the ruins of 16th century monastery. It belonged to the Augustinian order, but was founded much later than any of the other Icelandic cloisters, around 1493, i.e. shortly before the country's 16th-century Reformation.

In the summer of 2000, a preliminary site investigation was conducted in search of the cloister ruins. It revealed extensive ruins hidden under the grass outside of the former cemetery walls. After this discovery, ten years excavation started in 2002. Today, this cloister is the only one in Iceland to have been completely excavated throughout. An exhibition about the cloister is inside the cultural centre with VR technology and guidance.
