Three days in the Lagarfljót district

Here is a suggestion for three wonderful days in the surroundings of Hengifoss.

Day 1

Morning stroll in Hallormsstaður Woods – will you spot the wyrm monster that’s reputed to live in the lake? Rowing-boat trips for those who dare! Head to Skriðuklaustur via the natural rock bridge over the Klifá river. At the Snæfellsstofa visitor centre learn about Vatnajökull National Park, then visit the site of the medieval monastery. See the home of writer Gunnar Gunnarsson (1889-1975), then enjoy a buffet lunch at Klausturkaffi. Head for the highlands where Hrafnkels saga can be explored and see Europe’s largest rockfill dam by Kárahnjúkar and the gorge of Hafrahvammar. At Laugarfell the weary traveller can soak in a natural hot tub, or even stay the night. Or head back to Hotel Hallormsstaður for a splendid buffet, and enjoy the evening bonfire by the lake.

Day 2

Wake up at Laugarfell or Hafursá to magnificent views or by birdsong in the forest or by Giantess’s path. Walk up to the Hengifoss falls and enjoy the 128 m high waterfall. At Hrafnkelsstaðir walk in the footsteps of saga hero Hrafnkell and look for the wyrm monster. Maybe you’ll hear elven voices singing from Kirkjuhamar. Or just stretch out for a rest among the harebells in Ranaskógur Woods. Coffee buffet at Skriðuklaustur.

Day 3

Hire an ATV or take a horseback ride through Hallormsstaður Woods, before lunch at the hotel. Then walk up to Strútsfoss falls, or go angling in the Kelduá river for a trout to barbecue, or just meet the locals. And for the finishing touch to your stay in the district, head for Mt. Snæfell, with Easthighlanders and take a hike up the mountainside with Wildboys for unforgettable views.
